World Sleep Day (WSD) 2020 - Kuala Lumpur Malaysia

World Sleep Day (WSD) is an annual celebration of sleep & call to action on important sleep issues organized by World Sleep Day Committee of World Sleep. In Malaysia on 13th March 2020, Amlife International Sdn. Bhd. celebrated this annual event with the theme "Better Sleep, Better Life, Better Planet".

World Sleep Day 2020 - Malaysian Do Not Sleep Well

The goal of the first World Sleep Day was to bring together sleep healthcare providers to discuss and distribute sleep information. For the fifth straight year, Amlife International co-hosted with this annual event with World Sleep Society to advocates the importance of having proper sleep management to ensure a healthier lifestyle at the Palace of Golden Horses, Minew Resort, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

According to Mr Lew Mun Yee, Founder & President of AmLife, sleep education is not only close to our hearts and business philosophy but is increasingly important as sleep disorders are escalating rapidly in the region. "Together with World Sleep Society, Amlife is hosting a sleep showcase which includes sleep workshops and demonstration in 3 countries which is Malaysia, Indonesia and Taiwan this year," said Mr Lew.

For this year World Sleep Day event, Amlife has invited a number of international speakers to share sleep health insights. The first speaker was Ms Rosemary Clancy, Clinical Psychologist at the Sydney Sleep Centre and is also a Registered Psychologist with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency - AHPRA, who shared on how sleeping pills habits evolve and its long term effect on a person.

Mr Kerwin Chen, Nutritionist and Food Researcher

The next speaker is Mr Kerwin Chen, a Nutritionist and Food Researcher to shred his insights on achieving quality sleep through proper dietary nutrition and home-cooked recipe. From his talk, we found out eating the right food can also help to promote better sleep quality.

Why is good quality sleep so important, below are some of the sleep statistics to ponder on:
  • 27% people are having sleep problems in 14 countries - Source World Health Organization (WHO).
  • 35% Malaysian have some sort of sleeping. 
  • 53% of Malaysia's workforce has less than 7 hours of sleep.
  • 9 out of 10 Malaysians have some level of insomnia or sleeping problems.

Sleep disorders can lead to many health threat to a person. According to a study by USA Today, people who sleep less than 6 hours a day have 4 times higher stroke risk than those who sleep longer. while another study undertaken by Columbia University revealed that people who sleep less have a 73% higher chances of becoming obese.

Other studies have also found that lack of sleep can lead to a condition called myocardial infarction and also an increased risk of having cancer.
