We ventured into the quiet Section 17 Petaling Jaya neighborhood and discovered the Juu Nana Sakaba, which is located at 14, Jalan 17/54, Seksyen 17, 46400 Petaling Jaya, Selangor. As the name suggests, Juu Nana is 17 in Japanese and Sakaba is a bar, so it literally means "17 Bar."
Juu NaNa Sakaba Section 17 -PJ - Japanese Style Yakitori Bar
For the unfamiliar, Yakitori is a type of Japanese cuisine that consists of skewers grilled over charcoal. The meat or vegetable is cut into 1 to 2-inch cubes and skewered together along a bamboo pole (skewers) before being grilled over a charcoal fire. During or after cooking, the meat/vegetable is usually seasoned with sauce or salt.
Many working people in Japan will drop by these Sakaba after work for a few skewers, a couple of cold beers, and "blow some water" before returning home. For us, though it is a great way to begin a meal with a few skewers before moving on to the main course. We started with my favorite skewers, the Bara (RM7.00), which is pork belly, and the Tebasaki (RM7.00), which is chicken wings.
Next is the Sunagimo (RM 5.00)- Chicken Gizzard.
This is then followed by an order of Okura (RM4.00) - Ladies Finger,
Eringi (RM4.50)- King Mushroom
Negima (RM5.00) - Chicken With Leek
Sasami (RM5.00) - Chicken Breast
Nasu Dengaku (RM10.00) - Grilled Eggplant
The wait staff suggested that the chef had prepared some special Yakitori dishes for us to order and try out, that were not on the menu. It is a chicken fillet, specifically the inner fillet, which is one of the most tender parts of the chicken. This is available in three varieties, the first of which is Tori Mentai (RM7.00).
Next is the Tori Wasabi RM7.00
and the last one is the Tori Ume RM7.00 (plum based).
As previously stated, the best drink to complement these savory yakitori dishes is a cold, icy beer.
Good news for those of you who enjoy Japanese beer. Juu Nana Sakaba is having a Sapporo beer promotion where you can buy 3 glasses of Sapporo at RM50+ (from 5pm to 7pm) and 5 glasses at RM100+.
After finishing our appetizer we move on to taste some of the main dishes which the staff recommended for us to taste. The first of them is the Beef Tataki (RM35,00). We love the texture which is medium rare and the sauce complemented well and which is bedded with slice onions. We were told that this is a premium beef cut from Argentina.
Next was the - Ikamaru (RM38.00)- Grilled Whole Squid
Ebi Shioyaki (RM8 per skewer RM20.00 for 3 skewers)- The breaded prawn was superbly crispy and we like this a lot.
Shabu-Shabu Salad (RM20.00). A rather unique salad that is topped with an egg, that you can order with either sesame sauce or onion dressing.
Tori Chazuke (RM18.00) - Chazuke is a simple Japanese dish made by pouring green tea, dashi, or hot water over cooked rice. This is the first time, we are tasting the Chazuke, it is quite similar to the Teochew style porridge - a kind of bland taste with whole rice grain, but a very stomach-warming dish, especially for those that just wanted a simple meal that is topped with seaweed, julienne chicken meat, and chopped spring onion. It was a good combination for us especially after relishing a number of savory Yakitori skewers.
For lunch, Juu Nana Sakaba offers a couple of value lunch sets for you to choose from, namely the Grilled Salmon With Rice Lunch Set (RM35.00). All lunch sets come with an appetizer, Chawan Mushi, miso soup, and salad.
Gyu Don Lunch Set - Beef and Egg On Rice (RM35.00)
Set Lunch - Yakibuta Don (RM30.00) - Grilled Pork With Rice
Niku Ramen Lunch Set- (RM30.00) Noodles With Beef Slices
Overall, we found dining at Juu Nana Sakaba to be a pleasurable experience, with just the right touch for their Yakitori dishes, which we particularly enjoyed. The prices for the Yakitori are reasonable, and it's a pleasant place to dine with family and friends. If you enjoy Yakitori, this is a good place to start.
