In the early 50, they were many Hainanese Chef that can cook very delicious Western dishes. The reason being was most of the Hainanese usually work as Chef which was taught how to cook western dishes by the colonial master. I am one of those that frequent Hainanese Western food in the restaurant like the old Coliseum (Jalan TAR), Le Coq (Ampang) and Yut Kee (Jalan Dang Wangi) among others that I have lost touch with.
With that taste lingering, we had a review at the Wayne's Cafe Sri Petaling located 10, Jalan Radin Bagus 6, Sri Petaling, 57000 Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia that claimed to serves some of these authentic Hainanese western delights.
Wayne's is the name of the owners' son and the setup is one of the modern cafe settings that is great for a get-together or family dining.
The owner has gotten Uncle Phua - a retired chef of 77 years old who has over 50 years western culinary experience to assist in Wayne's cafe menu which consists of Uncle Phua signature dish which is the English Style Roast Pork.
Our dinner started off with the order of the Golden Meat Ball (RM18.00). It is a deep fried homemade meatball recipe that has its origin. It is served with the freshly made Hainanese Chilli Sauce (the Hainanese Chicken Rice Chilli Sauce) which are made on a daily basis.
The next appetiser is by the owner family recipe Choon Kuen Spring Roll (RM18.00). This Spring roll is unlike the normal one that uses the popiah skin but instead it uses the pig caul fats. When I was a child, these kind of spring rolls were quite common; nowadays it is very hard to find one that takes quite an effort to make. Eating this spring rolls remind me of those days. This family recipe uses the right amount of ingredient in the filling and is steamed before it is coated with a batter and deep fried to a crunchy, crispy texture.

For the Mains, we had the Uncle Phua Signature Roast Pork (RM25.00). Using Uncle Phua secret recipe is to marinade the Pork Belly and the special treatment of the meat. It is then rolled up and tied like a log and after one day it is then put in the oven with a combination of slow gentle heat to tenderise the meat, plus a shorter blast at a higher heat to crisp up the skin. The end result, you get is a juicy meat while having a crispy skin that married well with the apple sauce.
The next Mains is the Spanish Pork Chop (RM25.00). Compare to other Pork Chop, the meat that is used is the Pork Neck meat, which has a very small amount of fats while its' meat has a very tenderly texture. The Pork chop is grilled to the right char; is served with a slice of grilled apple and served with brown sauce.
Besides serving Western Food, Wayne's Cafe Sri Petaling does offer diners a number of oriental selection for you to savour in. Among these are Fried Rice with Roast Pork, or another one of Uncle Phua signature noodle which is the Fried Tung Fun with BitterGourd. But, for today, we tasted the Fried Kwai Fa Mien (RM15.00), this is another one of the dishes from the owners family.
So, what is so special about this Fried Kwai Fa Mien? For one, there are a lot of ingredients that are used to cooked this Yee Mee; which is pork strip, diced prawns, bean sprout, onion, cabbage and most important eggs that are fried together with a special sauce and topped with the strip of lettuce. The Wok Hei was just great as we can smelt the flavourful aroma of the noodle and its ingredients.
To finish off our meal, my partner had the Wayne's Signature Coffee (RM11.00). The coffee beans used at Wayne's Cafe Sri Petaling is from Lavazza.
While I had the Affogato (RM11.00) to end my review.
