Heritage Village @Jaya Shopping Centre Petaling Jaya – Penang Nyonya Street Delights Food Review


Many of us love to eat Penang food, as it is one of the states that serve mouth watering street food virtually in every corner. But, the next time, you crave for some of these Penang delights, you need not have to travel that far to taste it, you will be able to savour some of these dishes at Heritage Village located at L3-13, Jaya Shopping Centre, Section 14, 46100 Petaling Jaya Malaysia.


Jaya shopping centre is a rebuilt shopping mall in Section 14, which offers patrons with entertainment like cinema and a number of restaurants that have enjoyed brisk business since opening a couple of months ago.


My first impression, Heritage Village was the heritage rustic décor with age-old ornament used to provide that dining ambience of yesteryear in a comfortable air conditioned environment.


Heritage Village serves mostly single dish food i.e. like their Signature Nasi Lemak which comes with many different varieties namely Chicken Rendang, Beef Rendang, Ayam Inche Kabin , Sambal Sotong, Sambal Udang (the recipe of which was passed down from 3 generation).


Other rice dishes are the Otak Fried Rice - Otak-Otak Based Fried Rice accompanied with Fried Eggs, Chicken and


Pie Tee - Crispy top-hat like cracker filled with stir fried sengkuang and carrots.


Other single dishes which are noodles based are the Heritage Assam Laksa.





So, if you are really in for a quick lunch to savour some Penang Nyonya dishes in a comfortable environment, you know where to head to.


Heritage Village also serves ala-carte side dishes like Jui Hu Char - a nyonya dish made from stir fired sengkuang, carrots, dried squid and mushroom served with green lettuce or the


Heritage Chicken Loh Bak + Century Eggs + Fried Tofu


Nyonya Kuih (like Kuih Talam, Kuih lapis, Seri Muka  and etc which are placed on the table).


Some of the main dishes that you could order as add on to your single dishes are Assam Pedas with Ikan Pari or their 


Curry Fish Head too. Both these dishes are strong flavoured and are nice to be eaten with white rice.


At Heritage Village, you will be spoil of choices to order as there are just too many dishes for you to decide on.


For me, the best of the night has to be the Heritage Durian Cendol as I love Durian. It was just the right balance of the musky durian flesh mix with the cold slurpee cendol and big red beans that will drools you after a stomach filling meals of hot, spicy and sourish meals.


Others durians infused desserts include the Durian Bo Bo Cha Cha
and Durian ABC.

Bari Uma Ramen @Jaya Shopping Centre Section 14 Petaling Jaya – Super Tasty and Original Ramen even the Japanese like it.


They are many Ramen Restaurant in the Klang Valley but one of the latest new kid on the block is Bari Uma Ramen located at Jaya Shopping Centre, L3-11, Level 3, Jalan Semangat, 46100 Petaling Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia.


Bari Uma Ramen which literally means Super Tasty Ramen in Japanese, has more than 40 outlet in Japan and growing each year. Nearly every region in Japan has its own variation of ramen, from the tonkotsu (pork bone broth) ramen of Kyushu to the popular miso ramen of Hokkaido.  There is a huge market for Ramen as it is a staple food eaten by children and adult.


Most Ramen outlet in town are usually helm by male Chef, but here at Buri Uma Ramen, the head Chef is a lady and she is very particular about the quality of the food that are served to patron of this restaurant.


At Bari Uma Ramen, all the ramen are made in house. So, you are rest assured that the Ramen are as freshly made as possible to serve to you.


Here at Bari Uma Ramen, they served the Tonkotsu Ramen which is a cloudy white colored and thick broth made from boiling of pork bones, fat, and collagen over high heat for many hours. The end result is a hearty pork flavored and a creamy soupy based.


Our first dish of the night is Kara Uma which is a pork flavored shoyu spicy soup with thick cut flamed Chashu. You can order your noodle to be firm or original, the firm version is a little more harder and it last longer in the broth while the original is of a softer version i.e. it is cooked a little longer henceforth the softer texture. A piece of advice if you order the original, it is best eaten quickly as it tends to absorb the soup and would be soggy.


With the thick and strong pork broth and an added spicy dose, it was very appetizing. The ChaShu is individually grilled, unlike some which grilled the entire pork belly and then cut to individual pieces. The end result, you are able to taste the smoky taste of the ChaShu in every bite. The fatty layers of the pork belly virtually melt in your mouth with every bite of the meat.



Next is the Noritama-Uma (signature dish) which is a pork flavored shoyu soup with thick cut flamed Chashu Ajitama and Dry Seaweed. Here the Ajitama was served as a whole egg compared to other Ramen shop which will cut it into half egg. 


The reason being is when you bite into the Ajitama, the egg yolk literally spit out, the egg yolk is very runny and you can taste the shoyu taste which had penetrated into the egg white.


The next dish is the Gyoza (Pan Fried Dumpling) chicken filing. The dough was very thin and when pan fried was very crisp while the chicken meat has a strong garlic taste and was very tasty. 


It was delicious and complimented well with the shoyu dipping sauce.


For those that preferred a little spicy on the Gyoza, you can try the Nemi-mayo Gyoza   which is Pan fried Gyoza top with a spicy mayonnaise sauce. It had a tinge of spicy taste, which is not too overwhelming to go with the Gyoza.



Next, we had the Yakitori. In Japan, Yakitori is a snack food must like our satay ayam, where it is eaten while drinking shochu in Japan. For the evening we had the Negima – Chicken Thigh and Leek, the Butanegima – Pork Thigh and Leek and the Sasami – Chicken Breast.


I personally preferred the Pork thigh and chicken thigh as they were more firm and it was well marinated compared to the chicken breast which has a more bland taste and softer meat texture.


The last dish for the night was the Ishiyaki Chaofan Chashu which is Japanese Fried Rice with the Chashu. The rice type used in Bari Uma, were the short grain Japanese rice. It has a smooth texture and when cooked in the hot stone bowl, it maintained the heat on every spoonful until the last grain. The Chashu that was used to fried the rice is also been grilled before hand and cut into little pieces.



Overall, if you wanted to eat something other than Ramen, you can order this rice dish to try out. You will not regret it.


For me, Bari Uma Ramen have live up to it’s name, Super Tasty Ramen.

Crave Café @ Oasis Ara Damansara - Breakfast Like A King With Crave BIG Breakfast.


Like the saying goes “Breakfast like a King, Lunch like a Prince, Dinner like a Pauper”. With that in mind, we head over to try out the BIG breakfast at Crave Cafe located at BG-03, Oasis Square, Jalan PJU 1A/7, Ara Damansara, 47301 Petaling Jaya, Selangor.     


Crave café is inspired by its owner Australian love affair. So the décor and outlook pretty much size it up like the outback with comfortable dining area and sofa seats where you can hang out with your buddies for a nice get together.



Here at Crave Café, the line of coffee and tea are from the famous Toby's Estate Arabica Coffee in Sydney and are of the Woolloomooloo Blend from Sydney Australia. Toby coffees are of the mild roasted type and are not the type where you can get the coffee kick, which are suitable for those that prefer a not so strong coffee.


One of the advantages of a mild roasted coffee is, it leaves a little sweetness in the beans, so technically you don’t really need to add any sugar into the drink.


We had the opportunity to try out a few interesting coffee flavors one of which is the Dirty Chai Latte which I have not tried before. It is a one shot expresso mixed with Chai syrup and topped with cinnamon powder. I should have ordered a double shot as I like my coffee stronger.


For non coffee drinkers, you could opt for the Toby Breakfast Blend Tea, it has a smooth taste and a strong floral aroma.


The first breakfast set we sample was none other than the Crave BIG Breakfast which has 2 sunny side up eggs, sausages, beef bacon, baked beans, roasted tomatoes and mushrooms served with ciabatta.


The mushroom which was lightly sauteed was very tasty especially eaten with the toast, topped with some slices of sausages, bacon and eggs.


Next we had the Pancakes with Caramelised Banana & Maple Syrup – The pancakes was very fluffy and of the right texture. Eaten with the combination of the maple syrup and caramelized banana, the taste was just right. There were also sprinkles of cashew nuts too.


The third set of breakfast that we had was the Salmon Scramble – It is smoked salmon nestled on a bed of scrambled eggs served with focaccia. The scrambled eggs were very light and fluffy.


The saltiness of the smoke salmon and the sprinkle of parsley topping was a perfect combination with the focaccia. This dish is for those that prefer a lighter wholesome breakfast to start the day.

  
Crave Cafe will be introducing a new item to their breakfast menu – as of now, this dish has not been named but it is served with fried eggs, beef bacon and avocado paste with ciabatta.


The white paste is actually cheese spread which you can spread on the bread or eaten as it is. The strong avocado (green) paste was a perfect blend to the bacon and fried eggs.


For Lunch menu, you try out the Chicken Parmigiana, which is breaded chicken cutlets baked with Parmesan cheese and served with tomato sauce base. The Chicken cutlet is coated with parmessan cheese and oven baked.


You can taste the crispy chicken with the flavored cheese wrap around it. Slurp it up with the accompanied tomato sauce, it makes a tantalizing sweet sourish meal. The thinly slice baked potatoes was a perfect side dish to compliment this dish.


The Next Lunch menu dish was the Seabass With Spicy Sauce. This dish will be for those that prefer a little spicier food, the fish is first coated and deep fried and served in a bed of spicy sauce with a bowl of Buttered Herb rice, green beans and carrots.


For desserts, we started off with the


Gula Melaka Cake – I find this cake a little unique and it is an acquired taste to like this especially so, if you are those that loves anything Gula Melaka or sweet stuff. I don’t think you can find this cake in any places. You can taste the tiny pieces of Gula Melaka crystal in every little bite of the cakes, it has that slight crust bite feeling when eating this cake.


Nutella Mille Crepe Cake – It is a nutella infused crepe cake. Look at the multiple layers of nutella crepe.


Salted Chocolate Cake – this is another specialty cake serves at the Crave Café. The whole cakes is chocolate based and in the middle, there is a thin layer of melted salt which you can taste. It is a very interesting combination of the rich chocolate taste with a tinge of saltiness in every bite.


In conjunction with the Ramadan, Crave Café is having a Ramadan promotion.

Crave is having a promotion which comes with a homemade Soup, a choice of Main Course, a slice of homemade Cake and a Dragon Fruit Juice.


Main Course Selection:

Honey Glazed Roasted Chicken with mashed potato and grilled vegetables

Seabass in Spicy Cream Sauce served with Butter Herb rice

OR

Beef Stroganoff with Steamed Rice.
