Sanoook Thai Japanese Restaurant Sunway Pyramid West - Fusion Thai Japanese Cuisine

Fans of Thai and Japanese Food can take heed on this newly open Sanoook Thai-Japanese Restaurant Sunway Pyramid located at Lot 4 Ground Floor Sunway Pyramid Hotel West Bandar Sunway 47500 Subang Jaya Selangor.

Sanook which means 'Fun" in the Thai language sets the tone and theme for this restaurant.  To go one step further they have added an extra 'O' to the Sanook word which to them means 'Friendship'. In short, it means having fun with friends.

As a new sibling from the popular Thai food group i.e Chakri Palace Group, set the tone for the Thai Chef based on his secret recipe to craft out new fusion Thai food dishes with Japanese creative culture and presentation. This will set the tone for all its current and future dishes that will be featured at Sanoook Thai-Japanese Restaurant.

Ordering for your food at Sanoook Thai Japanese Restaurant Sunway Pyramid is using an interactive menu where at every table there is a tablet that lets you self order your drinks & dishes and even gets you your bills. No need to hello here and hello there anymore.

Our review started off with the 4 Season Platter (RM 37.90). A nice snack to start off a meal which has 4 different type of snacks which is the Crispy Calamari, Salmon Cream Croquette, Vegetarian Spring Rolls and the tasty Thai Fish Cake with Thai Chicken Ball. The snack was fried to a deep crisp and came with several sauce for dipping.

The next dish is the Sanoook Salad Japanese Cucumber Wrapped With Salmon, Avocado & Baked Apple (RM 29.90). A very refreshing salad to whet your appetite as the salad was filled with a combination of fresh tomatoes, leafy greens, avocado, baked apples, rolled salmon and dashes of sesame mayo sauce.

You can't miss out on the next dish which is Tom Yum Soup With River Prawn (RM 23.90), a signature dish at Chakri Palace. At Sanoook Thai-Japanese Restaurant Sunway Pyramid; the way to serve this soup came with a Japanese twist which the soup is served in sake bottle instead.

This is then followed by the Pan Fried Tuna Steak With Spinach & Mixed Mushroom Served With Teriyaki Sauce (RM 28.90).

For BBQ fans, Sanoook Thai-Japanese Restaurant Sunway Pyramid serves a few different set skewers; the first of which is that we tasted is the Salmon Belly Skewer With Lime Chili Sauce (RM 77.90). Loves the melting fats of the salmon belly which were matched with a tinge of  Lime sauce.

The second skewers set is the Chicken Skewer With Massaman Sauce (RM 32.90). Masaman sauce is a Thai concoction of onions, coconut milk, peanuts, and chilies. Much like the taste of a mild satay sauce.

For non-meat eaters, you can opt for the Vege Skewers set (Tomato, Corn, Zucchini, Capsicum, leek) With Sanoook Sauce (RM 28.90).

At Sanoook Thai-Japanese Restaurant Sunway Pyramid, as a Japanese fusion setup, they do offers a few varieties of sushi, the first of which that we tried is the Soft Shell Crab With Thai Mango Chili Sauce Sushi (RM 34.90).

or if you like it with a spicy treats, you can opt for the Tuna With Tom Yum Sauce Sushi (RM 27.90).

or the multi coloured Sanoook's Rainbow with Sesame Sauce  (RM19.90) - A very special sushi with a multitude of colour ingredients forming the rainbow colours.

Also lastly, one of the other special fusion dish that you probably can't find elsewhere is the Chicken Burger With Teriyaki Sauce (RM 17.90). The bun has been replaced with the compact rice which is shaped as a bun and topped with a seaweed sheet.

For desserts, we like the Fresh Durian Ice-Cream With Coconut Milk (RM 21.90). The Durian flesh makes it a real wonders and was perfectly matched with Vanilla ice cream intercepted with the creamy coconut milk. We really like the combination that makes this dessert; a cold and sweet end to one's meal.

The last dessert is the Thai Volcano (RM 18.90). Quite similar to the Malaysian ABC but with a slight variation in the ice shaving. Instead of the normal ice, the shaving is from a milk tea ice.  The end result is similar to having an ABC with Teh Tarik.

For health enthusiast, Sanoook Thai-Japanese Restaurant Sunway Pyramid offers a Salad Jaar Takeaway which comes in 4 flavours i.e A Full Feeling Soba (RM12.90), Orchard Muesli (RM12.90), All-Rounder Kick Boxer (RM14.90) and Omega Goodness (RM14.90).

Presenting Xenri Japanese Cuisine - Kaiseki Artistry dish

Aburi Hokkaido Mukimi Hotate - Pan-seared Hokkaido Diver Scallop with Purple Sea Urchin Glaze topped with Tatami Iwashi (Fried Baby Sardine) crackers. The scallop has a very firm texture and was well paired with the special rich sauce. Tasty to the last drop; this dish is traditionally served raw but Xenri chefs have created a non-raw dish using premium ingredient with mixed spices employing a slow-cooked process.

Chirimen Jyako Houba Meshi - Mountain Pepper Baby Sardine Rice wrapped with Magnolia Leaf. We love the fragrant of the leaf that has penetrated deep into the soft texture rice which was steamed with Sansho and baby sardine.  This dish is the award winning dish at the MIGF 2009.

Snow Crab Avocado Sphere - Layered with appetising organic tomato glaze, the Snow Crab is seasoned and coated with avocado and topped with beluga caviar and kyuri flower (Cucumber).

Kunsei Saba Jitate - Smoked Blue Mackerel Bisque.

Seared Bluefin Tuna and Avocado in Grapefruit - it is coated with healthy Chia seeds, the Bluefin Tuna is gently seared to maintain its juiciness. This dish is served with diced buttery avocado and the chef's signature Yuzu dressing.

Butter Poached Brittany Blue Lobster - the blue Lobster is poached at low heat in butter until fragrant to produce a firm and succulent meat texture. Served with deep fried purple carrot and a dressing of golden egg yolk with vinegar sauce.

Pen-Shell Carpaccio With Organic Apple Dressing - Freshly sliced pen shell layered with white fungus and Sakura Sho (seaweed) topped with deep fried Gyobou (Burdock Julienne) and organic Apple dressing.

Poached Black Cod With Chrysanthemum Leaf - Chrysanthemum infused Black Cod which is poached with fish stock and paired with jelly mushroom and Nameko mushroom (Slippery Mushroom).

Grilled Sea Catch King Prawn with Nezu Sauce. The king prawn is grilled with creamy Nezu sauce and served with crispy ink rice net, gingko nuts, edamame (soybeans) and scented chilli

Smoked Duck Mousse - Marinated for 24 hours, the smoked duck breast is steamed with cream and seasoning. Served with Bainiku (Red Plum Sauce) crackers.

Sous Vide Wagyu Rikuyaki - The tender and succulent Wagyu Beef was sous vide and topped with Rikyuyaki Sauce.

Mutiara Damansara Food: Minori Japanese Restaurant Special Kaiseki Omakase Set

Minori Japanese Restaurant which is located at The Royal Chulan Damansara Hotel 1st Floor No.2 Jalan PJU 7/3 Mutiara Damansara 47810 Petaling Jaya is famed and popular for its various Omakase dishes which offers it's' client a multitude of special exotic ingredients. +BestRestaurant ToEat got to taste the new offering of this season Kaiseki dishes specially crafted by the Great Master Chef Takahiro. You can also read our previous review of another exotic dish which is Cod Fish Sperm from this link.

We started our special "Kaiseki" Omakase meal with an appetizer which is the "Yum Tofu and Grilled Seasonal Eggplant with Crab Sauce, Ginger Flavour, and Mountain Caviar". This appetizer is served chilled and it was a delight to taste the many flavours from the ingredients and condiments. We started off with the soft tofu with crab sauce and move to the Eggplant which when eaten with the salmon roe exudes out a slightly natural salty taste. The Mountain Kaviar  which is used here as the topping is actually a black seed which gotten its name because of the same texture like of the caviar.

Our next course is the soup; what the chef has created was the special Steamed Eggs with Ohitashi Organic Wasabi Leaf and Asari Shell with Yuzu Orange Flavour broth. Normally in Japan the Ohistashi is cooked with Spinach but the Chef uses the Wasabi leaf for this dish. The silky soft steamed eggs are actually Chawanmushi which is topped with a citrusy orange yuzu flavour broth. Paired with the succulent Asari meat; it enhances the full flavour of this soup.

As with any Kaiseki meal, our grill item for the day is the White Miso marinated Butter Fish "Saikyo Yaki". The flaky soft meat texture of the butterfish was grilled to the right char thereby exuding the natural sweetness of the fish. Paired with Vinegar Tomato, Wasabi Lotus Root, and Sweet Potato, it marries a vinaigrette, sweet and mustardy taste of these side dishes to the grilled fish.

After the grilled food, we had the Nimono, which is a simmered dish. For this, the chef has prepared the Tender Beef Tongue With Special Sauce. Normally beef tongue is very chewy and has a rough texture, but the chef; using this method of cooking which is simmering the beef tongue in stock over a period of time until the liquid is fully absorbed into the beef tongue is able to cook the beef tongue until the soft meat like texture.

To finish off our Kaiseki meal, it is a norm to serve a rice based dish; our Shokuji is the Scallop Porridge Minori Style With Fried Cherry Blossom Prawn. The chef uses the combination of dried and fresh scallop to cook this very flavourful porridge. Each spoonful of porridge is filled with the dried scallop and coupled with the sweet flavour of the Blossom Prawn, it was a wonderful end to our meal for today.

For desserts, we had the Warabi Mochi and Green Tea Parfait served in a cocktail glass; lined with cut strawberries and smash adzuki bean and the chewy warabi (jelly-like) mochi at the bottom of the glass.

For sake lovers, you can try out the sake pairing that we had, the first one was the Jumai Daiginjo - a very smooth sake. This is the only Sake in the world that is brewed using the legendary Kikusui Sake rice.

and the Funaguchi Kikusui Nama Genshu which came in a can and has a very flowery and fruity taste. Sake in a Can is renown for its freshness as it does not go thru the normal pasteurization and dilution process. The Sake is can directly from the source and this enables it to maintain its natural aroma and flavour. Best served chilled.
