ATAS x GU:UM: A Modern Korean Dining Experience at The RuMa
Korean cuisine takes centre stage at ATAS, The RuMa Hotel and Residences, with GU:UM the restaurant as its collaborating culinary partner for a special four-month residency from 1 August to 30 November 2026.
Led by MICHELIN-starred Chef Louis Han, GU:UM brings its modern Korean steakhouse concept to ATAS, combining charcoal grilling, premium ingredients and familiar Korean flavours. Rather than a traditional Korean BBQ experience, the collaboration presents Korean cuisine in a more refined setting while keeping the warmth and sharing spirit of Korean dining.
For our visit, we followed the chef's recommendations and enjoyed four dishes that gave us a taste of what this collaboration is about.
A Stylish and Relaxed Dining Environment
Located within The RuMa Hotel and Residences, ATAS provides an elegant setting for the GU:UM collaboration.
The dining environment feels sophisticated but comfortable, making it suitable for an evening meal with friends, family or a special occasion. The atmosphere also works well with the concept of sharing, where dishes can be placed in the centre of the table for everyone to enjoy.
With GU:UM's fire-focused cooking bringing a Korean influence to the menu, the experience feels different from a typical Korean BBQ restaurant. Instead of diners cooking at the table, the kitchen takes care of the grilling, allowing guests to sit back, enjoy the surroundings and concentrate on the food and conversation.
Yukhwae Jeon – A Creative Korean Starter
We started with Yukhwae Jeon, a creative combination of Korean beef tartare and potato pancake.
The dish brings together the richness of beef tartare with the savoury character and texture of a potato pancake. It was an interesting opening because it takes familiar Korean flavours and presents them differently.
For us, it was a good introduction to the modern Korean approach that GU:UM brings to the ATAS dining experience.
Surf & Turf Platter – The Main Highlight
The highlight of our meal was the Surf & Turf Platter, created for sharing between two to three people.
Featuring a variety of land and sea ingredients, the platter is served with grilled vegetables and side dishes. With charcoal cooking playing an important role, the ingredients carry that appealing grilled, smoky character central to GU:UM's concept.
We enjoyed the variety because there was something different to try throughout the meal. The platter also encouraged us to share and taste the different components together, making it a fitting centrepiece for the dining experience.
This was the dish that best represented the collaboration for us — fire, premium ingredients and the joy of sharing.
Uncle Lulu's Fried Rice – Comforting and Familiar
Next came Uncle Lulu's Fried Rice, featuring stir-fried kimchi, fried rice and grilled squid.
After the grilled platter, this dish brought a more comforting and familiar element to the meal. The kimchi added a savoury, slightly tangy flavour, while the grilled squid added another layer of smokiness.
It is the type of dish that feels closer to everyday comfort food, showing another side of Korean cuisine beyond premium grilled meats.
We liked how it helped balance the meal and brought a more homely touch to the table.
Mandarin Bingsu – A Refreshing Finish
To end the meal, we had the Mandarin Bingsu, made with mandarin sorbet, yoghurt, citrus and granita.
After a meal featuring grilled meat, seafood and fried rice, the citrus flavours made this a refreshing dessert to finish with. The sorbet and granita added a lovely cold texture, while the yoghurt provided a little creaminess.
It was light, refreshing and a good way to cleanse the palate after the richer savoury dishes.
Our ATAS x GU:UM Experience
What stood out to us about the ATAS x GU:UM collaboration was the balance between a refined dining environment and the comforting flavours associated with Korean food.
The meal began with the creative Yukhwae Jeon, moved into the sharing-style Surf & Turf Platter, followed by the comforting Uncle Lulu's Fried Rice, and finished with the refreshing Mandarin Bingsu.
Each dish offered something different, while the overall experience remained connected by GU:UM's focus on fire, Korean flavours and sharing.
At the same time, the setting at ATAS provides a more polished atmosphere for the experience. It is a place where diners can enjoy Korean-inspired cuisine at a relaxed pace without the busy and sometimes smoky environment associated with traditional Korean BBQ.
For those looking to experience a different side of Korean cuisine in Kuala Lumpur, the ATAS x GU:UM collaboration at The RuMa offers an interesting combination of contemporary Korean cooking, charcoal-grilled dishes and comfortable hotel dining.
